[edit] Concept

In agent based modeling the elements and their interactions are described, and the collective behavior is observed.

Agent-based modeling is to be contrasted with differential equation modeling where the quantities are often not specifically associated with entites but rather average or aggregate properties of the system. Differential equations are also often deterministic, and agent-based models are often stochastic (i.e. they include randomness), but it is also possible to include randomness in differential equations, and to have deterministic agent based models.

[edit] Examples of Agent Based Modeling

If we want to simulate the behavior of ants, an agent based model would show the behavior of an ant, and many of them would be represented as many ants. A more traditional differential equation model would describe the total population of ants, or the density of ants over space as the variables of the model.
