System Dynamics deals with how things change through time. All change in nature and human affairs is controlled by feedback loops in which flow rates change stocks and the values of stocks control flows. In complex systems, containing several stocks and feedback loops, the human mind usually misinterprets how the structure of stocks and flows will behave in creating changed conditions. Computer simulation is the only reliable way to connect structure to behavior. System Dynamics models of a real system are used as a laboratory in which to discover revised structures and alternative ways to control flows which when introduced into the real system will produce more desirable behavior.
