[edit] Molecule/idea code expression in layered networks

Phil Fraundorf, University of Missouri - Saint Louis

Abstract

How might we better inform idea-expression to multiple layers of community structure in metazoan communities, given that informed gene-expression in eukaryotes is key to the development and sustainable operation of individual metazoans? As for nucleic acid codes, with ideas an ability to adapt the codes expressed (i.e. translated into structure or action) in light of inputs from more than one level of organization seems crucial e.g. to recovery from injury. Bacteria and other prokaryotic microbes are in that sense our genetic ideologues, less able to inform their songs to issues on more than one scale. They are also more likely to be "all that's left" when we're confronted with decreasing thermodynamic availability i.e. less free-energy per capita and/or an unfriendly environment.

Strategies to address this problem include: (i) protocols for gathering data on correlation models of community health e.g. in terms of niche structures focused inward and outward from the physical boundaries of skin (self), gene-pool (family), and meme-pool (culture), (ii) quantitative dynamical models of the impact of policy changes and media perturbations on those correlations, and (iii) guidelines for use of language, particularly in the media, which call attention to its respect for correlations on more than one level.
