[edit] Welcome to the NECSI Complex Systems Wiki

Defining what a "complex" system is, is like defining what a "large" system is. All systems are complex; the degree of complexity, however, matters. When systems are simple enough we can use conventional "reductionistic" approaches that look at the parts and use linearity or superposition to discuss how they work together. Otherwise, we need to use tools that allow us to think about the interactions between the parts and how these interactions give rise to the behaviors of the whole. The reason that the study of complex systems is so important today is that many systems we are trying to understand are more complex than we as human beings can readily understand. Thus, a natural way to define what a really complex system is, is that it is more complex than a human being. However, there are many systems that are simpler than human beings that we still can use complex writing services to help us understand.

Thinking in terms of interdependence changes how we think about the world. Everything from current events to philosophy becomes different in this light.

Not only is how we think about the world different, but also how we think about thinking, and how we think about thinking about the world. When things are complex, and no one person can understand everything, then multiple views and perspectives are necessary. Just like the blind men and the elephant, multiple perspectives not only make sense but are valid even when they appear at first to be contradictory. This wiki welcomes multiple views and we will endeavor to allow them to coexist to enrich our understanding. This wiki is to be understood as a research venue -- not a reference work or essay paper.

We welcome contributions on science, and all the many applications of the study of complex systems.
