Complex systems tools include approaches that are conceptual, analytic, and computer simulation based. The study of a particular complex system generally involves many approaches that provide different insights into its properties and behavior. Often modern complex systems tools are distinguished in going beyond conventional approaches that simplify the description of a system using approximations. Still, conventional tools are generally an important point of departure for discussing complex systems. By applying them we can show which approximations succeed and which fail, explaining the importance of using a complex systems based approach.
